The old parish church of Nigg (Ross-shire), which was formerly a mensal church of the Bishop of Ross, was largely rebuilt in 1626. The ancient church houses Nigg Cross, a pictish cross-slab dating back to the 8th century which is thought to be the finest example of ancient stone sculpture in Scotland. In 1949, when the union of the congregations of the former United Free charge of Nigg and Chapelhill was dissolved, the Nigg portion was transferred to join Nigg Old, along with the former Nigg United Free Church. In 1966 however, the congregations were re-united when Nigg Old and Nigg Chapelhill united together under the name of Nigg. Nigg Kirk Session sat within the Presbytery of Tain, until the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Aberdeen. The congregation of Nigg Parish church has been dissolved in recent years and the church is now looked after by Nigg Old Trust. |
