There existed of old at Burghhead a chapel of St Aidan which was thought to have been erected at the end of the 6th century, the parish church of Burghhead however wasn't built until 1822 and the parish itself was established in 1867, when it was disjoined from Duffus and erected quoad sacra. A new parish church was later built to serve Burghead in 1902. In 1929, at the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, the congregations of Burghead Parish Church and Burghead United Free Church joined together, and a number of years thereafter the old quoad sacra church was sold to the Town Council for use as a public hall. Burghead was later linked in 1963 with Alves and in 1992 the two linked charges were united under the name of Alves and Burghead. In 1995 Alves and Burghead linked with Kinloss and Findhorn. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Elgin, until the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Moray. |
