The Presbytery of Melrose was first erected by the General Assembly in 1581 and in 1613 a number of its parishes were annexed and incorporated within the Presbytery of Earlston, which was established within that same year. The original seat of this Court was appointed as Melrose; however, in 1640 it was transferred to Selkirk, after which time the Presbytery became titled the Presbytery of Selkirk. Early records of the original Presbytery of Melrose still in existence cover the period running between January 1607 and January 1619 and records of the Presbytery of Selkirk commence in 1691. The seat of the Presbytery reverted once more to Melrose in 1929. As from 1 January 1976 the Presbytery united with the Presbytery of Peebles to form the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles. The court formerly sat within the Synod of Merse and Teviotdale. |
