In 1843, at the time of the disruption, Thomas Hastings, minister of Wanlockhead, and a substantial proportion of his congregation adhered to the Free Church. For ten years following the establishment of the Wanlockhead Free Church congregation a site was refused for the purposes of erecting a church and service had to take place in the open air. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, the congregation became Wanlockhead United Free Church and a number of years thereafter, following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Wanlockhead United Free was termed Wanlockhead Hastings Memorial, Church of Scotland. Hastings Memorial later went on to unite with the congregation of Wanlockhead St John's in 1932 and after the local union, under the name of Wanlockhead, the former parish church continued in use as the place of worship for the united session. A further union was established in 1952 with Leadhills, under the name of Wanlockhead and Leadhills, and the united session was linked in 1973 with Crawford. The kirk session, which sits within the Presbytery of Lanark, was later renamed Lowther and the linkage with Crawford was terminated in 1994 in favour of a linkage with Glencaple. |
