When the parochial divisions of Edinburgh were resettled in 1641 the North-west was allocated the Tolbooth, or South-western corner, of St Giles' for its worship. There were two charges until 1828. The congregation from 1690 became Edinburgh's most evangelical, and drew in large numbers. In 1829 the congregation was removed from St Giles' due to reconstruction work which was being undertaken within the church and was transferred to Albany Street Independent Chapel. They moved back in 1832 to the re-designed West of St Giles' until a new church building was erected at the head of the Lawnmarket to accommodate them (designed by James Gillespie Graham with Augustus W N Pugin) , the foundation stone of which was laid in 1842. Tolbooth later formed a union with St John's in 1940 and in 1956 Tolbooth St John's joined with the Highland Church to form Highland Tolbooth St John's. Highland Tolbooth St John's later united with Greyfriars in 1979. The former Tolbooth Church was eventually converted for use as offices etc for the Edinburgh International Festival, opening in 1999 under the name 'The Hub'. |
