Regular service has taken place within the area of Newark since 1767, with worship originally held within an old chapel. A new church however was erected in 1774, which was granted chapel constitution in 1834 and at the same time had a district assigned to it. The parish of Newark was later disjoined from Port-Glasgow in 1855 and erected as a separate parish, quoad sacra. The congregation of Port Glasgow Newark, which sat within the Presbytery of Greenock, was dissolved in 1987. |
