A church built in 1736, within the district which was later to become St Georges, was named the Laigh (meaning low) Kirk due to the fact that it was constructed on low lying ground, and in 1738 the Laigh Kirk Parish was disjoined from that of the Abbey Parish of Paisley by the Commissioners for the Plantation of Kirks. In 1819 a new church, which was named St George's, was built for the Laigh Kirk parish on a new site, and since its erection the parish has been known as Paisley St George's. A union later followed in 1985 between Paisley St George's and Paisley St Andrew's, under the old name of Paisley Laigh. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Paisley. |
