The old parish church of Dalziel belonged originally to the Abbey of Paisley, but in the early 12th century the church was transferred to the Canons of Glasgow Cathedral, in whose possession it remained up to the reformation in 1560. The parish church of Dalziel was rebuilt in 1789 as the old building had fallen into a state of disrepair, and a growing population within the parish necessitated a lager place of worship to accommodate the parishioners. Dalziel parish church was removed to Motherwell in 1874, the year in which a newly erected church was completed, and for a time the old church served as a mission chapel for the southern area of the parish. It followed in 1880 that the parish of South Dalziel was disjoined from Dalziel and from this time the old parish church became the Dalziel South Church. Following the mergers between the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church Presbyteries, and later the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Dalziel Parish Kirk, as erected in 1874, was renamed Motherwell Dalziel High and the Old South Dalziel Church became known as Motherwell South Dalziel. In 1970 Motherwell Dalziel High united with Motherwell Dalziel North under the name of Motherwell Dalziel, and Motherwell Dalziel later united with Dalziel St Andrews, to form the session of Motherwell Dalziel St Andrews. The old parish church of 1789 still remains in use today as Dalziel South church. The kirk session of Dalziel sat within the Presbytery of Hamilton. |
