On the 27th February 1861, the parish of Colonsay and Oransay, which was originally known simply as Colonsay, was disjoined from that of Jura and erected quoad omnia. A priory of St Oran had been founded on the island of Colonsay during the time of St Columba and additionally within the parish there had existed an Augustinian Priory of St Columba, founded around 1350, on the island of Oransay. The session declared a continued vacancy between the years of 1988 and 1997, after which time a link was established with the charge of Kilchattan. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Islay, later of Islay and Jura and, following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, became part of the Presbytery of Lorn and Mull. |
