Blythswood Church, Glasgow, began with an Independent chapel, built in 1849-1852 on the north side of Bath Street at Holland Street, and later purchased and presented to the established church by James Baird of Cambusdoon. The quoad sacra parish of Blythswood was disjoined on 19 January 1875 and terminated in 1920, following presentation to the court of teinds of a petition calling for union between the parishes of Blythswood and St Matthew's. The parish so formed took the name St Matthew?s-Blythswood. Further amalgamations followed: in 1960 with the charge of St Stephen's-Buccleuch, to form the session of St Stephen's-Blythswood; in 1967 when St Stephen's-Blythswood united with Cowcaddens, under the name of Glasgow St Stephen's; and in 1971 when Glasgow St Stephen's joined with the congregation of Glasgow Renfield to become Glasgow Renfield-St Stephen?s. The same church building continued in use through during these amalgamations, and continues to serve Renfield-St Stephen?s. The kirk session sits within the presbytery of Glasgow, and was within the synod of Glasgow and Ayr (later Clydesdale). |
