Montrose, St John's Chapel of Ease was opened in 1829 and in 1834 was granted a constitution by the General Assembly. In 1843, at the time of the disruption, the minister of Montrose St John's, and a number of his congregation, adhered to the Free Church, retaining the church buildings when they did so. At the 1900 union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, the charge became Montrose St John's United Free Church, and in 1953, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, St John's joined with the congregation of St Luke's to form the session of Montrose St Luke's and St John's. A further union later followed in 1977 between Montrose St Luke's and St John's and Montrose St George's and Trinity, under the name of Montrose St Andrew's. Montrose St Andrew's was linked in 1990 with Farnell. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Brechin and later of Brechin and Fordoun until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Arbroath, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united together under the name of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of Angus. |
