Edinburgh, St John's Kirk was opened in November 1840, the foundation stone having been laid by the Lord Provost in April 1839. The parish of St John's was disjoined from that of Old Greyfriars in 1840. The church was named St John's because land near to the west end of the Church had, before the Reformation, passed to the Knights of St John. At the Disruption in 1843 the majority of the congregation, along with minister Thomas Guthrie (former minister of Old Greyfriars) , left to form St John's Free. St John's survived, and went on to unite with Tolbooth in 1940 under the name Tolbooth St John's. That congregation united in 1956 with the Highland Church under the name of Highland Tolbooth St John's. Following this union Highland Tolbooth St John's further united in 1979 with Greyfriars. |
