The ancient parish of Glentanar was united with that of Aboyne around the beginning of the 17th century. It is thought that one central church was erected in 1761 to replace the old church of Aboyne and also that of Glentanar, and in 1842 this building was superseded by the present day church. The united session became known simply as Aboyne until the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, when the charge was termed Aboyne St Machar's, and in 1936 Aboyne St Machar's joined with the former United Free Church congregation of Aboyne South. After this local union, under the name of Aboyne, the former South church and offices were sold. In 1984 Aboyne established a link with the charge of Dinnet and a number of years later in 1993 the two congregations united to form the session of Aboyne-Dinnet. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kincardine O'Neil and later of Deeside until 1962 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Deeside and the Presbytery of Alford were united under the name of Presbytery of Deeside and Alford. Following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of Kincardine and Deeside. |
