This Quoad Sacra congregation was originally named West Rutherglen Church of Scotland. The church was built in 1836 and the General Assembly granted a constitution for it in the same year. At the Disruption the minister and congregation came out and joined the Free Church and the building closed. The charge lay vacant until 1858 when the Rev John Brownlee was appointed minister. The parish was disjoined from Rutherglen on 29 January 1868. In 1929 the congregation changed its name slightly to Rutherglen West Church of Scotland. In 1965 a union took place with Rutherglen Munro, the united charge keeping the name Rutherglen West. A further union occured in 2007 with the congregation of Rutherglen Wardlawhill. The united charge being Rutherglen West and Wardlawhill Church of Scotland. In 2014 discussions were held regarding a further union with the congregation of Rutherglen Old, but due to local differences of opinion, the decision not to unite was made in October 2014. It was in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Glasgow and Ayr (later Clydesdale). |
