During the 17th and 18th centuries, Inverness, as with most villages and towns in Scotland, was experiencing rapid population growth, and as a result, a need was created for additional accommodation for worship. In response to this requirement a second charge was established for the parish of Inverness in 1624, and in 1641a third charge, by the name of St Mary's, was set up for. St Mary's was erected to provide Gaelic service (partly due to the fact that the minister of the second charge had no knowledge of the language) and in 1649 a church to house the congregation was erected. In 1951 the name of Inverness St Mary's was changed to that of Dalneigh and in 1973 a union was established with the charge of Bona, under the name of Inverness Dalneigh and Bona. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Inverness. |
