Ministry of the Edinburgh: Old Kirk, Kirk Session is recorded from 1598. The congregation worshipped in the middle of St Giles' for many years from the end of the 16th century, only moving out briefly when St Giles' was reconstructed in 1829-1833. The congregation was then small and mostly elderly, but it had a second charge until 1836. By the Annuity Tax Abolition Act, 1860 ( ), the parish was deprived of its endowment and ministry, but the congregation was determined to continue, and remained within St Giles' until 1869. A site for a church was found in St John's Street, a parish quoad sacra was created by a Decree of Disjunction and Erection on 13 March 1882, and the church opened the following June. As the congregation diminished, it was decided to transport the charge to Pilton (where new housing was being established), an Act of the General Assembly being passed to that effect in 1940. The Church and the Church Hall were both sold in 1940 to Moray House Training College. A new church opened in 1951. A further Act of the Assembly in 1952 divided the Old Kirk Parish, and required that the Old Kirk be moved, on this occasion to Pennywell Road, West Pilton. |
