Prior to the reformation, the church of Stichill belonged to the Priory of Coldingham and the kirk session records ministry from 1567 in the person of William Hood, reader. At a date prior to the 20th May 1611, Stichill was united by the Lords Commissioner with the parish of Hume, under the name of Stichill and Hume. In 1938, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Stichill and Hume parish church united with the former United Free church congregation of Stichill Cairns Memorial. After the local union, under the name of Stichill and Hume, the former Cairns Memorial church ceased to be used as a place of worship. Further union later followed in 1950 with the charge of Nenthorn, under the name of Stichill, Hume and Nenthorn, and a link was established between the united session and Makerstoun and Smailholm in 1963. This link however was terminated in the following year, but in 1975 the arrangement with Makerstoun and Smailholm was re-established once more. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kelso, later of Jedburgh and Kelso, and presently sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Jedburgh. |
