Prior to the reformation the church of Smailholm belonged to the Abbey of Jedburgh and the session records ministry from 1574, in the person of Thomas McKenna, reader. In 1962 Smailholm was united with the charge of Makerstoun, under the name of Makerstoun and Smailholm and the united charge was additionally linked with Stichill, Hume and Nenthorn. The union between Makerstoun and Smailholm was subsequently dissolved in 1964 in favour a linking arrangement with Smailholm with Stichill, Hume and Nenthorn but a number of years later in 1986 the union was re-established, after which time the links with Stichill, Hume and Nenthorn continued. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kelso, later of Jedburgh and Kelso, and presently of Jedburgh. |
