A church, which was re-built on a new site in 1807, and which belonged anciently to the monks of Kelso, is know to have existed at Makerstoun from as early as the 12th century. In 1957 Makerstoun established a link with Linton however this arrangement was terminated in 1962 to permit a union with Smailholm, under the name of Makerstoun and Smailholm. The union between Makerstoun and Smailholm was subsequently dissolved in 1964 in favour of a linking arrangement with Smailholm with Stichill, Hume and Nenthorn but a number of years later in 1986 the union was re-established, after which time the links with Stichill, Hume and Nenthorn continued. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kelso, later of Jedburgh and Kelso, and presently of Jedburgh once again. |
