Edinburgh, New Street Chapel opened on 16 March 1794 and was originally a Chapel of Ease of Canongate Kirk. It was not until 1834 that, due to an appointment of the General Assembly, it was deemed to be a parish quoad sacra. The minister at the time of the Disruption joined the Free Church and no replacement was appointed. The Act to Uncollegiate the Parish of Canongate 1867 (30 & 31 Vict., c.107) made New Street quoad sacra but there was still no minister. The charge was abolished in 1884 under the provisions of the Annuity Tax Abolition (Edinburgh and Montrose etc) Act (1860) Amendment Act 1870 (33 & 34 Vict., c.87) and the building later demolished. The church was in the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
