Prior to the reformation the church of Restalrig was a collegiate parish church which had been founded by King James III and which had a dean and nine prebendaries. After the first General Assembly of the reformed church in 1560 however, the church was left to fall into a state of disrepair and in 1609 the official place of worship for the district of Restalrig was designated by Act of Parliament as St Mary's in Leith. It wasn't until the year 1837 that a church was rebuilt at Restalrig, which in that same year was opened as a Chapel of Ease to serve the parish of South Leith. A minister was appointed to the chapel in 1870 and in 1912 Restalrig Parish was revived when it was disjoined from that of South Leith and erected quoad sacra. In 1968 the name of the parish was changed to New Restalrig. A union with the Edinburgh, Craigentinny St Christopher's congregation took place on 1 September 2016 to form Willowbrae Parish Church. |
