Kirriemuir old parish church, which was rebuilt in 1787, was dedicated to St Mary and in 1201-1207 was granted to the Abbey of Arbroath. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1567, in the person of Alexander Auchinleck. Following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Kirriemuir old parish church became termed Kirriemuir Barony and in 1972 Kirriemuir Barony united with the charge of Kirriemuir St Ninian's, under the name of Kirriemuir Old. Further union followed in 1999 with the congregation of The Glens, to form the session of The Glens and Kirriemuir Old. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Forfar until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Arbroath, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united under the name of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, Kirriemuir Old became part of the Presbytery of Angus. |
