Edinburgh: Lady Yester's was founded by Margaret, Lady Yester (widow of James, Lord Hay of Yester) prior to her death in 1647. Following serious damage to the interior by English soldiery in 1650, the church was restored and erected into a parish by the town council in 1655 for the south-south-east district of Edinburgh, its area being subtracted from the Tron or south-east parish. The minister was deprived of his charge in 1662, and the parish reannexed to the south-east parish. The building had other uses, including in 1687 being given over to accommodate the parish of Canongate during the building of their own church. Upon completion of the Canongate Church, Lady Yesters was re-erected in 1691. Lady Yester's united with Greyfriars in 1938, known thereafter as Greyfriars. The church was in the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
