Blackfriars Church, Glasgow, began in 1622, when the church of the former Dominican Friars (established in Glasgow by 1246), was rebuilt by the town and known thereafter as College Church, from the neighbouring Old College building, which was itself on the site of the former friary. After a fire the church was rebuilt in 1699. In 1875 the whole area was acquired for what became College Goods Yard and a new church was built at Westercraigs, Dennistoun (dedicated 1877). The parish was terminated in 1982 on uniting with Dennistoun and Dennistoun South as Dennistoun Blackfriars. The charge was in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Glasgow and Ayr (later Clydesdale). |
