There existed anciently a chapel at Stoer, which was formerly within the parish of Assynt, and in 1829 a parliamentary church was built here. The parish of Stoer was later disjoined from Assynt and erected as a separate parish quoad sacra in 1878, however in 1932 the two charges were re-united once more, along with the former United Free Church congregation of Assynt South, to form the session of Assynt and Stoer. Following the union the Assynt South Church was sold and a number of years later the former Stoer Church was closed due to dilapidation. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dornoch until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Dornoch and the Presbytery of Tongue were united together under the name of the Presbytery of Sutherland. |
