Govan Old Church, Glasgow, was the centre of a large medieval parish which was one of the prebends of Glasgow Cathedral. It originally extended on both sides of the River Clyde, but its area was much reduced by disjunctions in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The present church, dedicated in 1888, had several predecessors, the most recent dating from 1826 and 1762. It contains monuments attributed to the 10th and 11th centuries, removed from the surrounding churchyard. Notable ministers have included George Fielden Macleod (1930-1938), who left to found the Iona Community. As a Church of Scotland charge it is in the presbytery of Glasgow and was formerly in the synod of Glasgow and Ayr (later Clydesdale). |
