The old church of Kirkconnel, which was rebuilt in 1729 on a new site, existed prior to the reformation as a vicarage and held a dedication to St Conal. In 1680 the parish of Sanquhar was united with Kirkconnel however this union was to be short lived and was dissolved in 1727. At the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church the session became termed Kirkconnel St Conal's and in 1972 Kirkconnel St Conal's formed a link with Kirkconnel St Mark's. The two linked sessions later united in 1983, under the name of Kirkconnel once more. Kirkconnel kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Penpont, later of Dumfries and, following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
