St Andrew's church was built by the Kirk Session of Dundee, the Nine Incorporated Trades and the Thee United Trades to relieve overcrowding in the Burgh Churches. The building was opened in 1774 and was locally known as the Cowgate Kirk. At the Disruption in 1843 seceders left the congregation and formed St Andrew's Free church. The remaining Established church was erected a charge quoad sacra and was disjoined from the parish of Dundee St Mary's on 3 March 1873. The building was altered in 1892 and repaired in 1939. A hall was acquired in 1927 and further halls in 1975. The church building is A-Listed and the halls, formerly a Glasite church, are B-Listed. St Andrew's church is in the Presbytery of Dundee, which was in the synod of Angus and Mearns until the abolition of synods in 1992. |
