The parish church of Galashiels belonged, prior to the reformation, to the Abbey of Kelso and during the 13th century was united with the congregation of Bolside. The parish was known anciently as Lindean and it wasn't until 1622 that the situation of the church was removed from Lindean to Galashiels. A new church, dedicated to St Paul's, was opened within the bounds of Galashiels in 1881, which was later declared the parish church of Galashiels, and the old church was consequently sold. Following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Galashiels Parish Church became known as Galashiels Old and St Paul's. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Selkirk, later of Melrose and, following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles. |
