Biggar Parish church was founded as a collegiate charge in 1545 by Malcolm, Lord Fleming and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The church was built on the site of an older building which held a dedication to St Nicholas. At the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Biggar Parish church became termed Biggar St Mary's and in 1976 St Mary's established a union with the charge of Biggar Gillespie Moat Park, under the name of Biggar. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Biggar and later of Lanark. |
