The church of Tongland belonged prior to the reformation to the Abbey of Tongland, which was founded around the year 1150 by Fergus, Lord of Galloway. The old parish church, the ruins of which still stand, was built on the site of the Abbey and remained in use until 1813 when the present day building, which has recently fallen into disuse, was erected. In 1932, following the Union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Tongland joined with the former United Free Church congregation of Tarff Valley. After the union both churches remained in use and the charge continued under the name of Tongland. In 1960 a link was established with Twynholm and in 1977 a further linkage followed with Borgue, these links however were terminated in 1988 in favour of a union between Tongland and Twynholm, under the name of Tarff and Twynholm. The charge of Balmaghie was linked to Tarff and Twynholm on the same date as the union. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright, until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
