In 1128 the church of Corstorphine existed as a chapel of St Cuthbert's and belonged to the Abbey of Holyrood. In 1429 the Collegiate Church of Corstorphine was founded by Sir John Forrester of Corstorphine, and some of the current church building was constructed about then. For some years after the Reformation Corstorphine's status as a parish was lost, but in 1587 it was recognised as a parish within the Presbytery of Edinburgh. The Collegiate church and the old parish church existed side by side until 1646, when the old parish church was removed, and the Collegiate building became the parish church with some alterations. Gogar, formerly a separate parish, was united with Corstorphine in 1599. Ravelston and Saughton areas were added to Corstorphine parish in 1630. At the Disruption in 1843 a number of the congregation broke away to form the Corstorphine Free Kirk. |
