The kirk session of Eyemouth was established in 1618 by charter of James VI, which disjoined Eyemouth from Coldingham and erected it as a separate parish. The charter was later confirmed by Act of Parliament on 28th June 1633 and a new church was built many years later in 1812. In 1954, following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Eyemouth old parish church united with the former United Free Church congregation of Eyemouth St John's. The two charges were joined under the name of Eyemouth and both churches were retained after 1954 for a time, however the former Eyemouth parish church was later sold, and is presently a local museum and Tourist Board office. A link was established in 1987 with Coldingham with St Abb's. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Chirnside and later of Duns. |
