The Kirk Session of Edinburgh Highland Tolbooth St John's, which sat within the Presbytery of Edinburgh, was formed in 1956 by the union of The Highland Church and Tolbooth St John's. After the union the former Highland Church was sold and used for a time as the Edinburgh Festival Offices. The minister of the Highland church became minister of the united charge and in 1967 Highland Tolbooth St John's was declared to be 'Gaelic-essential' with a Gaelic service held each Sunday. A further union later followed in 1979 with Greyfriars, under the name of Greyfriars Tolbooth and Highland. The former Tolbooth Church on the Lawnmarket was eventually converted for use as offices etc for the Edinburgh International Festival, opening in 1999 under the name 'The Hub'. |
