On the 29th May 1838 Haddington St John's was declared a parish quoad sacra by the Commission of Assembly and the parish church was opened in September of the same year. At the disruption in 1843 the minister, and the large majority of the congregation of St John's, adhered to the Free Church and thus the church building was retained accordingly for a time, until the established church re-claimed it in 1849. St John's church stood vacant between the years of 1849 and 1876, when ministers of the Parish of Haddington commenced service within the church, and in 1897 the constitution was revived. In 1910 however the General Assembly rescinded the constitution and the old church of Haddington St John's was converted for use as a church hall for the Parish of Haddington. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Haddington and later of Haddington and Dunbar. |
