Prior to and at the time of the reformation in 1560, the Abbey Church of Holyrood served as the parish church for Canongate. Whilst ministers to the parish of Canongate are recorded from 1560 the Abbey Church remained to serve the Canongate until 1672 when it was required as the Chapel Royal, but it remained as the parish church until 1687 when King James VII and II needed it as the Chapel for the Order of the Thistle. The congregation moved out into Lady Yester's Kirk until the completion of Canongate Kirk (begun in 1688) in 1691. In 1856, when the Burgh of Canongate became part of Edinburgh the Canongate Kirk was made an Edinburgh burgh church. There were two charges in the kirk from c1590 to 1867, when the second charge was abolished by the Act to Uncollegiate the Parish of Canongate 1867 (30 & 31 Vict., c.107). The patronage of the first charge belonged to the Crown from 1712 to 1867, and of the second to Edinburgh Town Council. The kirk is in the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
