Ardwell church, which succeeded an iron church in which services were held from 1881, was built in 1900-1902 and the parish of Ardwell was disjoined from that of Stoneykirk on the 7th March 1902 and erected quoad sacra. In 1935, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Ardwell Parish Church united with the former United Free Church congregation of Sandhead, under the name of Ardwell-Sandhead. After the union both churches remained in use and a further union followed in 1974 when the charge of Stoneykirk joined with Ardwell-Sandhead, under the name of Stoneykirk. A subsequent link was later established in 1988 with Kirkmaiden. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Stranraer until 1963 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Wigtown and the Presbytery of Stranraer were united together under the name of the Presbytery of Wigtown and Stranraer. |
