Edinburgh Presbytery has existed since Presbyterianism was introduced in 1581. The Churches within Edinburgh Presbytery stem from different beginnings, some have been in existence since 1581, some are the result of unions of congregations, others are the result of the Disruption in 1843 when the Free Church of Scotland was formed. In the beginning the presbytery was made up of the following charges: St Giles, Canongate, Restalrig (Leith), Duddingston, Liberton, Hailes (Colinton), Currie, Ratho, Kirknewton, Calder, Corstorphine, Gogar, Cramond and St Cuthbert's. All of the charges have remained within the Presbytery of Edinburgh with the exception of Kirknewton and Calder which were transferred to the Presbytery of Livingston and Bathgate in 1976. In this same year several additional parishes were transferred to the Presbytery of Edinburgh, including Dalmeny, Queensferry, Kirkliston and Abercorn. |
