Prior to the Reformation the charge of Penpont was a vicarage and the church of Penpont belonged to the Abbey of Holyrood. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1567, in the person of James Taylor. In 1942, Penpont united with former United Free Church congregation of Scaurbridge and Burnhead keeping the name of Penpont. The old Penpont Parish church continued in use as the place of worship, with the former Scaurbridge and Burnhead church being used as a church hall. In 1957 Penpont united with the session of Keir and in 1980 a further union followed with the charge of Tynron, under the name of Penpont, Keir and Tynron. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Penpont and later of Dumfries, until the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
