A mission first commenced in the village of Auchencairn in 1847 and in 1855, largely due to donations gifted by David Welsh of Collin and Miss Mary Culton of Auchenatony, a church was opened. The parish of Auchencairn was later disjoined from that of Rerrick and erected quoad sacra in 1856, with the same donors acting as the majority contributors to the endowment of the parish. The charge of Auchencairn, which became termed Auchencairn St Oswald's upon the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, formed a union in 1932 with the former United Free church congregation of Auchencairn St John's. After the local union, the session became termed Auchencairn once again and the former St John's church and manse were sold. A link was later established in 1964 with Rerrick and in 1987 Auchencairn declared a vacancy which continued until 1991. In 1991, Auchencairn united with Rerrick under the name of Auchencairn and Rerrick and the united charge was linked with Buittle and Kelton on the same date. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright until the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
