The church of Edinburgh St Paul's was declared a parish quoad sacra in 1836, the church having been erected in the same year by means of an endowment provided by Agnes, daughter of Thomas Hunter of Glencarse. Under the terms of Miss Hunters endowment the chapel remained in the possession of the minister and the congregation when, at the time of the disruption in 1843, they joined the Free Church. The congregation later became St Paul's United Free Church in 1900 and in 1929, after the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, once more reverted back to Edinburgh St Paul's, Church of Scotland. In 1942 Edinburgh St Paul's united with the charge of Newington East, under the name of St Paul's Newington. After the union the former Newington East buildings continued in use for the congregation of the united charge and the St Paul's church and halls were leased to the Edinburgh Corporation, and later sold in 1958. In 1984 the St Paul's Newington formed a further union with Kirk O' Field, under the name of Kirk O' Field, and the St Paul's Newington church ceased to be used as a place of worship. |
