Earlston was disjoined from the Presbytery of Melrose or Selkirk and, along with Gordon and Smailholm from the Presbytery of Kelso, was erected a Presbytery by George, Archbishop of St Andrews in 1613. The Presbytery of Melrose attempted to have Earlston returned to their jurisdiction in 1615, but without success. The seat of the Presbytery was transferred to Lauder by the General Assembly on 13 May 1768, but was restored to Earlston in 1876. The Register begins at 5 March 1691. |
