Portobello St James was first established as a mission station in 1874, with services, conducted by the minister of Duddingston, being held in Portobello Town Hall for a time. In 1880 the Mission Station became a Chapel-of-Ease of Duddingston and a new church, erected for the congregation in Rosefield Place, was opened by the moderator of the General Assembly in 1912. A number of years later in 1920 the church was given quoad sacra status. A union with the congregations of Portobello St Philip's and Portobello Old churches took place in August 2014 to form Portobello and Joppa Church of Scotland. The kirk session has sat within the Presbytery of Edinburgh throughout its existence. |
