The old church of Kelso was dedicated to St Mary and it belonged, prior to the reformation, to the Abbey of Kelso. In around the year 1648, the abbey, which had been significantly damaged at the hands of Herford during his invasion in 1545, was partially repaired to serve as the parish church of Kelso and remained so until 1773 when a new church building was erected. Kelso Old later formed a union in 1988 with the congregation of Sprouston, under the name of Kelso Old and Sprouston. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kelso, later of Jedburgh and Kelso and presently of Jedburgh. |
