During the 17th century the boundaries of the parish of Johnstone were twice altered, once in 1674 when part of the parish of Garrel was annexed to it and again when an area of the old parish of Dungree was added. The parish church was later rebuilt in 1733 and again in 1822. In 1959 Johnstone established a link with the congregation of Hope Memorial, this arrangement however was terminated in 1970 and the two congregations were instead united, under the name of Johnstone. A further link later followed in 1971 with Kirkpatrick-Juxta. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Lochmaben, later of Annandale and, following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Annadale and Eskdale. |
