The church of Ruthwell was dedicated to St Cuthbert's and the session records ministry from 1567 in the person of John Ireland. Inside the parish church there stands the reconstructed ancient monument called the Ruthwell Cross, which dates back to the 8th century. In 1934 Ruthwell united with the former Ruthwell United Free church congregation of Mount Kedar, under the name of Ruthwell and Mount Kedar, and a link later followed in 1969 with Cummertrees. A second link was formed between Ruthwell and Mount Kedar and Mouswald in 1980. The kirk session was termed Ruthwell, as Mousewald was dropped from the name, sat within the Presbytery of Annan, later of Dumfries and, following the reconstruction of the Presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. In 2011 a union took place between the congregations of Cummertrees and with Mouswald to form Cummertrees, Mouswald and Ruthwell Church of Scotland. |
