The church of Meldrum, which was known of old as Bethelnie, was dedicated to St Nathalan and belonged, prior to the reformation, to the Abbey of Arbroath. St Nathalan is though to have established a church at Bethelnie in the 7th century and the roots of the parish church remained here until 1684 when it was transferred to Meldrum. In 1939, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Meldrum parish church joined with the former United Free church congregation of Meldrum North. For a time after the union both churches remained in use in alternate months, however the old parish church was restored and rebuilt in 1953, and from this time became the parish church of Meldrum. Prior to 1953 a further union had taken place with Bourtie, under the name of Meldrum and Bourtie, and both the Meldrum and the Bourtie parish churches remain in use to the present day. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Garioch until the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Gordon. |
