The pre-Reformation church was appropriated to the Abbey of Holywood. At one point there used to be within the bounds of Dunscore the Cistercian Priory of Friar's Carse, a cell of Melrose Abbey. Ministry began in 1562 in the person of Sir John Welsh, vicar. On 18 March and 8 April 1645, the Synod of Dumfries decerned that a new church should be built by the heritors and parishoners at Dalgonar. The new church was completed by 16 March 1649 and was rebuilt in 1823. From at least 1976 the session was within the jurisdiction of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright Presbytery, before which time it was within the jurisdiction of Dumfries Presbytery. Old Dunscore united with the United Free Church congregation of East Dunscore on 11 February 1940. On 8 December 1977 the session linked with Glencairn and Moniaive. |
