The church of Hawick, record of which exists as early as 1183, received a dedication to St Mary in 1214 and prior to the reformation it had existed as a rectory. In 1884 a new church was erected to serve the parish of Hawick and the old church, which had been built in 1764, became the church of the quoad sacra parish of Hawick St Mary's. In 1972 Hawick Old established a link with Teviothead and in 1989 the session of Hawick St Mary's and Old was formed when Hawick Old united with Hawick St Mary's. A further linkage later followed in 1996 with Cavers and Kirkton. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Jedburgh. |
