Dunrossness parish was united with that of Fair Isle in the sexteenth century, and by the turn of the seventeenth century Sandwick and Cunningsburgh were joined with them, making a union of four parishes. However, on 24 October 1870 Sandwick and Cunningsburgh were severed again from Dunrossness and Fair Isle. By 1929 Fair Isle was dropped from the name, the charge being called simply Dunrossness Church of Scotland. There were Mission stations at both Bigton and Fair Isle, attached to this congregation, and in 1959 the mission at Bigton united with the Dunrossness congregation, retaining the name Dunrossness. A further name change took place sometime later when the charge became known as, the rather wordy, Dunrossness and St Ninian's including Fair Isle Church of Scotland. |
